The mixing of various remote sensing tools enriches the analysis of the archaeological marks, as areas sited in Irpinia (Campania N-E) show and where many archaeological features are set. Key roads and sites mark this area: Regio Tratturo Pescasseroli-Candela, via Aemilia, Traiana, Herculia and Aequum Tuticum (S. Eleuterio-Ariano Irpino). Since 2010, the Laboratory of Ancient Topography and Photogrammetry (University of Salento) studies both the vicus and roads. The research led for via Herculia have identified marks that could reveal the presence of medieval sites as the “motte and bailey castle”, known in the Norman age in the Capitanata (Apulia N-O), but not in Irpinia. This study has mixed photo-interpretation, LiDAR data and field surveys on three sites: loc. Macchiacupa, loc. Masseria Imbimbo (Ariano Irpino), loc. Bosco di Contra (Scampitella). This approach has helped to classify two of them as false marks, but loc. Bosco di Contra is probably a novel fortified medieval site.
