Qualche precisazione sul senso allegorico nell’Epistola a Cangrande (e in altri commentatori)

This paper re-examines the paragraphs of the Epistle to Cangrande devoted to the literal and the allegorical sense of the Commedia, showing that the interpretation of the poem there suggested has precise moral connotations. This reading appears, on the one hand, to be incompatible with the “allegory of the theologians” stricto sensu, and it seems, on the other hand, to belong to a low-average cultural milieu, already widespread in the first stages of the «secolare commento», but still far from Dante’s own theoretical consciousness.

L’articolo riesamina i paragrafi dell’Epistola a Cangrande dedicati ai sensi letterale e allegorico della Commedia, mostrando che l’interpretazione del poema lì proposta ha connotazioni spiccatamente morali. Questa lettura appare da un lato incompatibile con un’allegoria dei teologi in senso stretto, esemplata anche solo in parte sull’esegesi figurale delle Scritture, e sembra d’altro canto propria di una temperie culturale medio- bassa, diffusa già nelle prime fasi del secolare commento ma lontana dalla consapevolezza teorica di Dante.
