Abstract

The collecting mania of the so called “vasi etruschi” (ancient Greek and Italic vases), which spread noticeably in the eighteenth-century Naples, also affected Ferdinando Galiani. He was one of the most brilliant figures in Europe during the age of Enlightenment and the antiquity stands out among his multifaceted interests. Indeed, Ferdinando Galiani gathered in his house at Naples, together with other different artefacts, a remarkable collection of vases, which later on he sold to Gustav III, king of Sweden, in 1784. Unpublished documentation, scattered into various archives, now allows to trace the journey of those vases from Naples to Stockholm and to recognize them individually in the collection of the Nationalmuseum.
