Etruscan tomb frescoes show many examples of objects depicted as if they were hanging from the tomb walls or other painted objects. The motif typically characterizes Hellenistic tombs, but it also appears in tombs of the Archaic and Classical periods. The analysis of these objects and their figurative ensembles allows us to acknowledge different functions performed by the objects within the image, understand how the space was conceived, characterized and depicted, and trace variations in the function assigned to the burial environment. Based on the case study provided by these “hanging objects”, this article proposes an overall analysis of the “mimetic” experience at work over the long period in Etruscan wall painting

Abstract
Etruscan tomb frescoes show many examples of objects depicted as if they were hanging from the tomb walls or other painted objects. The motif typically characterizes Hellenistic tombs, but it also appears in tombs of the Archaic and Classical periods. The analysis of these objects and their figurative ensembles allows us to acknowledge different functions performed by the objects within the image, understand how the space was conceived, characterized and depicted, and trace variations in the function assigned to the burial environment. Based on the case study provided by these “hanging objects”, this article proposes an overall analysis of the “mimetic” experience at work over the long period in Etruscan wall paintingI documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
