The paper presents the preliminary results of a research project on the representation, visualisation and perception of monuments and architecture in Roman artistic practice. It will initially move from the iconographic analysis of two case studies: the well-known Pompeian fresco of the “riot in the amphitheatre” and the so-called “Anaglypha Traiani”. On the one hand, these examples allow us to examine the iconographic choices and communicative strategies artists adopted to suggest the identification of the buildings and events depicted. On the other hand, they allow for a reflection on the possible role of architecture in such representations. Therefore, we will adopt a phenomenological approach to the study of these images, also investigating the role that movement and dynamic observation inevitably played in the reception of such depictions.

Abstract
The paper presents the preliminary results of a research project on the representation, visualisation and perception of monuments and architecture in Roman artistic practice. It will initially move from the iconographic analysis of two case studies: the well-known Pompeian fresco of the “riot in the amphitheatre” and the so-called “Anaglypha Traiani”. On the one hand, these examples allow us to examine the iconographic choices and communicative strategies artists adopted to suggest the identification of the buildings and events depicted. On the other hand, they allow for a reflection on the possible role of architecture in such representations. Therefore, we will adopt a phenomenological approach to the study of these images, also investigating the role that movement and dynamic observation inevitably played in the reception of such depictions.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
