This essay examines the motif of the lurking satyr on 4th-century BCE Etruscan mirrors. These liminal figures are not voyeurs, but witnesses signaling the inaccessibility and private nature of the scenes at which they are looking. Through the gaze of this witness-creature, the image becomes a tool for mediated knowledge between the human realm and the invisible. The satyr acts as a guarantor of a sacred boundary, reflecting the coeval philosophical dialectic between appearing, being, and the limits of sight, to which Italic art also contributes.

Abstract
This essay examines the motif of the lurking satyr on 4th-century BCE Etruscan mirrors. These liminal figures are not voyeurs, but witnesses signaling the inaccessibility and private nature of the scenes at which they are looking. Through the gaze of this witness-creature, the image becomes a tool for mediated knowledge between the human realm and the invisible.
