The paper investigates the role of color in late Gothic noble family chapels in Naples, considering it as a means of transforming surfaces and materials. From the painted marble revetments of the Pappacoda Chapel (c. 1420–1425), adjacent to the Basilica of San Giovanni Maggiore, to the aniconic decorative systems of the Caracciolo del Sole Chapel and the Tomb of Ladislaus of Durazzo (c. 1428–1432) in San Giovanni a Carbonara, painting operates as a medium for concealing or integrating matter, thereby enhancing the plastic and scenographic impact of the space. What emerges is a decorative lexicon that persistently negotiates the boundary between the real and the illusory, between relief and surface, generating a perceptual experience rooted in the synesthetic interplay of artistic languages.
