The article considers the banquet scene that decorated the external cella frieze of the Nereid Monument, a 4th-century BC funerary monument erected in Xanthos (Western Anatolia, present-day Turkey). The scene, populated by numerous figures including the dynast himself and members of the court, is analysed taking into account iconographic and compositional aspects; in addition, comparisons from the same period are proposed from other regions of the eastern Mediterranean under Persian power. In so doing the contribution intends to reflect on the language of power adopted in Xanthos highlighting both its distinctive elements and the aspects shared with other areas in a broader context.

Abstract
The article considers the banquet scene that decorated the external cella frieze of the Nereid Monument, a 4th-century BC funerary monument erected in Xanthos (Western Anatolia, present-day Turkey). The scene, populated by numerous figures including the dynast himself and members of the court, is analysed taking into account iconographic and compositional aspects; in addition, comparisons from the same period are proposed from other regions of the eastern Mediterranean under Persian power. In so doing the contribution intends to reflect on the language of power adopted in Xanthos highlighting both its distinctive elements and the aspects shared with other areas in a broader context.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
