Issued on November 17, 1938, the decree Measures concerning the Defence of the Italian Race represented the key test of the fascist anti-Semitic campaign. The decree gave the legal definition of "Jew", establishing prohibitions in every sphere of Jewish life: it banned marriages between "aryans" and "Jews", expelled the persecuted from their jobs and heavily struck their properties.
