In this paper I consider some of the problems in moral psychology that tragic fiction brings to our attention. I consider Hume’s account of the attractions of tragedy and suggest that it is unsatisfactory. I then focus on the nature of our desires when respond- ing to tragic representations, and argue that we need a distinction between real desires and what people have called “i-desires”. I show how we can draw this distinction in a principled way.

Abstract
In this paper I consider some of the problems in moral psychology that tragic fiction brings to our attention. I consider Hume’s account of the attractions of tragedy and suggest that it is unsatisfactory. I then focus on the nature of our desires when respond- ing to tragic representations, and argue that we need a distinction between real desires and what people have called “i-desires”. I show how we can draw this distinction in a principled way.File in questo prodotto:
