Abstract

Last two decades’ scientific excavations and surveys unearthed archaeological evidences, which allow us to outline a remarkable context of economic productivity and commercial dynamism in Cilicia (4th-7th century AD). During Late Antiquity, several rural sites experienced a considerable development; the biggest ones built up also churches and became little bourgades (i.e. Işıkkale and Karakabaklı). At the same time, the research about amphorae kilns has shown a picture of Late Roman Amphora 1’s monoproduction; this amphora had its raison d’être for middle- and long-range trade of oil and wine obtained from late antique Cilician farms. Religious formulas and symbols on tituli picti often placed on LR1 have surely had a prophylactic value, putting goods under divine protection, but they could also subtend a source from ecclesiastical estates or a participation of the Church in trading activities.
