Orazio Gentileschi and the Medici court: new light on the collecting history of the Penitent Magdalene (Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Mansi, Lucca)

This article offers the first detailed reconstruction of the collecting history of the Penitent Magdalene, now in the Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Mansi, Lucca, which replicates one of the most successful compositions by Orazio Lomi Gentileschi (1563–1639). Documentary evidence shows that this painting was in the main Medici residence, the Palazzo Pitti, from 1639, just a few months after Orazio’s death, and remained there until 1853, the year in which it was transferred to Lucca. This information sheds new light on the long-neglected appreciation of Orazio Gentileschi at the Medici court, since it represents the first certain proof of the existence of his compositions in the Florentine grand-ducal collections.

Questo articolo offre la prima ricostruzione dettagliata della storia collezionistica della Maddalena penitente, oggi conservata al Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Mansi a Lucca, che riproduce una delle composizioni di maggior successo di Orazio Lomi Gentileschi (1563–1639). Documenti inediti attestano che il dipinto si trovava nella residenza principale dei Medici, Palazzo Pitti, dal 1639, pochi mesi dopo la morte del Gentileschi, e vi sarebbe rimasto fino al 1853, anno in cui fu trasferito a Lucca. Tali acquisizioni gettano nuova luce sulla fortuna del Gentileschi presso la corte medicea, a lungo negata, rappresentando la prima prova certa dell'esistenza delle sue composizioni nelle collezioni granducali fiorentine
