In this work I propose my approach to research in Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI). I reaffirm the need to keep user experience and human-centered software design as North Stars of research. I propose a framework to produce contributions to this area, as well as offering several implications of this work that involve all the disciplines connected with research in XAI, from law to psychology, from software engineering to philosophy. Such implications include regulation, human perception and cognition, manipulation, the quality and humanity of trust, the ultimate goals of XAI and the concern of scientific paternalism.

Abstract

In this work I propose my approach to research in Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI). I reaffirm the need to keep user experience and human-centered software design as North Stars of research. I propose a framework to produce contributions to this area, as well as offering several implications of this work that involve all the disciplines connected with research in XAI, from law to psychology, from software engineering to philosophy. Such implications include regulation, human perception and cognition, manipulation, the quality and humanity of trust, the ultimate goals of XAI and the concern of scientific paternalism.
